Chestnut and Fantaisies Baroques welcome you from July 30 to August 4, 2018 to their fourth summer school of period dances in Normandy.

With four different subjects and three instructors (Cécile Laye, Irène Feste and Pierre-François Dollé), you’ll be able to make up your own schedule according to your tastes and how energetic you feel. You may opt for an intensive dance programme, up to 6 hours daily, or choose a mix of workshops and time for resting or for touring the area. Each day will start at 9 a.m. with a half hour of warming up exercises, led by each instructor in turn.

In our workshops, the programme allows for all levels of dancing. Each dancer will be taught variations suitable to his/her possibilities.

Figure Dances Workshop (FD) (3 hours : 9:45-12:45) : Cécile Laye

16th and 17th century Figure Dances: from the Italian to the English tradition

Picking in both repertoires, we’ll study choreographies built on different measures or choreographies with different ways of filling the same measure. We’ll also see how the same dance evolves from walking to figures.

• Barriera (a Fabritio Caroso choreography published in 1581)
• Spanish Pavan – (Arbeau’s and Santucci’s variations, 1588 and early 17th century)
• Graies Inne Mask (published by John Playford in 1651)
• Sweet Kate (published by John Playford in 1670)
• Monk’s March with the Wanders (The Dancing Master – John Young, 1710)

Baroque Dances Workshop (BD) (3 hours: 9:45-12:45): Irène Feste and Pierre-François Dollé

• « La Contredanse », a ball dance for one man and one woman choreographed by Louis-Guillaume Pécour, on a music from the Italian Opera « Xerxès » written by Francesco Cavalli and Jean-Baptiste Lully.  Xerxes was staged at the Louvre castle in the paintings gallery for the King, just after his marriage to Maria Teresa of Austria, the Spanish Infanta, in 1660. (ref. La Belle Dance, catalogued byFrancine Lancelot, 1995)

• « Le Cotillon des Festes de Thalie », a kind of contredanse for four couples.

AFTERNOON : early 19th century dances from France and England

Regency Dances workshop (DR) (1h30 : 15h/16h30 or 17h/18h30 on alternate days) : Cécile Laye

We’ll cover figure dances published in writer Jane Austen’s lifetime (1775-1817) or related to the Regency period (1811-1820) during which the Prince of Wales, elder son of George III (1760-1820), ruled by proxy. We’ll see some specific English country dance characteristics:

• Chichester Bells (James Platts, 1797)
• Lord Grantham Whim (Alexander Wills, 1810)
• La Fête du Régent (Mrs Eliston, dancing master in Bath, 1812)
• Lady Charlotte Campbell’s Waltz

Danses 1er Empire (DE) workshop (1h30 : 15h-16h30 or 17h-18h30 on alternate day) : Irène Feste and Pierre-François Dollé

• 3rd quadrille out of the « 28ème Recueil de Contre-danse et Waltzer » by Louis Julien Clarchies, former Conductor of the Court Balls. Five contredanse figures named La Laurence, La Léocadie, La Rodolphe, La Mendoce, La Trufaldin. We’ll use the vocabulary found in Jean-Henri Gourdoux-Daux’s works.

EVENING ACTIVITIES

Evening entertaiment will be organized for trainees and instructors to share a good time:

• Tuesday: films and team quizz on period dances
• Wednesday: will be decided by trainees
• Thursday:  Costume Ball including the dances studied in the workshops. (Please note: costume is not a must.)

THE INSTRUCTORS

---

Cécile Laye studied historical dances in England with Dolmetsch Historical Dance Society, Nonsuch History and Dance and EFDSS (English folk Dance and Song Society). She studied in particular with famous teachers or researchers such as Anne Daye, Anne Cottis, Peggy Dixon, Ethyl Anderson, Marjorie Fennessy, Tom Cook and Alan Davies. In France, she studied under Francine Lancelot, Andréa Francalancci and Barbara Sparti. In 1998 she founded the CHESTNUT company to make available the repertoire of figure dances of the time of the Stuarts and the English inheritance, from a literary and historical point of view, in collaboration with musicians, dancers, actors, singers, horse riders and fencers. She also graduated from Cours Florent in acting and staging.

After a diploma in ballet dancing, Irène Feste studied « Belle Dance » with  L’Eclat des Muses, a company led by Christine Bayle. In 2007, she founded her own company with Pierre-François Dollé:  Fantaisies Baroques. They design and perform dance/theatre shows in schools and music schools. Irène Feste specialises in baroque and Premier Empire (Napoleonic time) dances, her two main fields of research. She regularly dances with compagnie Divertimenty.

After studying various subjects at the Köln academy, Pierre- François Dollé started dancing many different styles in several companies, working in Germany, England and other countries. Back in France he graduated as a dance teacher (DE diploma). His path also crossed Christine Bayle’s with whom he created many ballets. Besides he dances in another company, l’Eventail, and has a strong choreographing activity in various styles.

1. By car

Le Tapis vert is 200 km away from Paris and 130 km away from Rennes.

2. By train

The nearest train station is Alençon, reached either through Surdos from Paris Montparnasse-Vaugirard or by TGV through Le Mans. Share taxi or car from Alençon station.
