On consid\u00e8re d\u2019ordinaire que les danses \u00e9dit\u00e9es par John Playford incluant un \u00e9l\u00e9ment de mime ou des baisers sont de facture ancienne, et comme il est de fait qu\u2019on en trouve un certain nombre dans les quatre premi\u00e8res \u00e9ditions du \u00ab Dancing Master \u00bb, il est tentant de les rapprocher des branles morgu\u00e9s de la Renaissance d\u00e9crits par T. Arbeau, comme par exemple le branle des chevaux, le branle des lavandi\u00e8res, le branle des sabots, le branle des Ermites et le branle de Malte.
\nAmong the dances published by John Playford, those including elements of mime are usually thought to be older than the others. Since some are to be found in the first four editions of the \u00ab\u00a0Dancing Master<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, one is tempted to compare them to Renaissance \u201cbranles morgu\u00e9s\u201d described ty T. Arbeau, for instance the Horses Branle, the Washerwomen one, the Hooves, the Hermits\u2019, and the Malta \u201cbranle\u201d.<\/p>\n

\n\u00ab An Old Man is a Bed Full of Bone \u00bb et \u00ab Kemp\u2019s Jig \u00bb \/ 1\u00e8re \u00e9dition o\u00f9 l\u2019homme actif fait tourner sa dame sous son bras avant de l\u2019embrasser \u00ab This as before holding your woman by one hand and let turne under your arm and kisses \u00bb.
\n\u00ab Sweet Kate \u00bb \/ 4\u00e8me edition, danse d\u00e9j\u00e0 cit\u00e9e dans la brochure accompagnant le CD \u00ab Sugar and Spice \u00bb o\u00f9 les danseurs font un mouvement d\u2019enroulement avec leurs mains avant de brandir un doigt : \u00ab wind your hands and hold up your finger, wind your hands again and hold up another finger of the other hand \u00bb.
\n\u00ab Catching of Quails \u00bb \/ 4\u00e8me edition, o\u00f9 les hommes secouent la main de leur partenaire et leur marchent sur le pied : \u201ctake his own woman by the hand and shake it 3 times\u2026 put his toe to his woman 3 times\u201d.
\n\u00ab The Maid in the Moon \u00bb \/ 4\u00e8me \u00e9dition, o\u00f9 la danse est con\u00e7ue pour que les trois hommes embrassent toutes les femmes.
\nCependant \u00ab My lord Byron\u2019s Maggot \u00bb appartient \u00e0 une p\u00e9riode bien post\u00e9rieure aux danses cit\u00e9es plus haut et il faut croire qu\u2019on n\u2019\u00e9tait toujours pas las des danses mim\u00e9es. Cette danse propose un jeu malicieux avec le contre-partenaire.
\nEncore n\u2019est-il pas trop engageant si je m\u2019en r\u00e9f\u00e8re \u00e0 l\u2019investissement demand\u00e9 dans \u00ab The Old Maid in Tears \u00bb qui sera publi\u00e9e dans les derni\u00e8res \u00e9ditions du \u00ab Dancing Master \u00bb conduites par J. Young (1718-1728). Jugez plut\u00f4t : au cours de cette danse, on vous demandera de vous coiffer d\u2019un foulard, de pointer du doigt et de sourire, de vous s\u00e9cher les yeux et de para\u00eetre surpris. Un vrai ballet d\u2019action miniature avant la lettre !!<\/p>\n

However \u00ab\u00a0My lord Byron\u2019s Maggot\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> is a much later dance than those on the above list; it seems dancers had not tired of mime dances. It calls for a bit of bantering with the counter-partner.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t ask for much action, compared to \u00ab\u00a0The Old Maid in Tears\u00a0\u00bb <\/em>published in one of the last editions of the <\/em>\u00ab\u00a0Dancing Master\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>by J. Young (1718-1728). See for yourself: during the dance you\u2019ll be asked to don a headscarf, point and smile, dry your tears and look surprised. A miniature action ballet before its time!<\/p>\n
