Son p\u00e8re vient de mourir et sa maman quitte l\u2019Italie pour son pays d\u2019origine. C\u2019est une pianiste qui exerce son m\u00e9tier dans des piano-bars et comme accompagnatrice de chanteurs et dans les bals.\u00a0<strong> <\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4>La petite Milena Salvini baigne dans la musique et tout naturellement, elle commence le piano et la danse classique.<\/h4>\n<h4>C\u2019est d\u2019abord la musique que Milena choisit en marchant sur les traces\u00a0 de sa m\u00e8re. Elle rentre au conservatoire national de musique \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 15 ans. Elle y fait ses \u00e9tudes jusqu\u2019en 1955 en classe d\u2019harmonie, contrepoint et fugue et elle finit son cycle de formation avec deux premiers prix\u00a0: contrepoint et harmonie. Sur la photo de classe (image 4 de la gallerie), c\u2019est la tr\u00e8s jolie jeune femme accoud\u00e9e \u00e0 la pointe du piano \u00e0 droite.<\/h4>\n<h4>Mais le cours de sa vie change quand elle assiste \u00e0 un spectacle de Kathakali. C\u2019est la passion d\u2019une vie qui \u00e9merge \u00e0 ce moment pr\u00e9cis, pour tout ce qui regarde l\u2019Inde\u00a0: sa danse d\u00e9votionnelle, sa danse th\u00e9\u00e2tre et sa musique. Elle reprend s\u00e9rieusement la danse, notamment la danse contemporaine (elle dansera dans la compagnie de Sara Pardo) et \u00e9tudie le mime pendant quatre ans chez le mime Decroux.<\/h4>\n<h4>En 1962, elle d\u00e9croche une bourse pour aller \u00e9tudier le Kathakali en Inde. Elle y reste deux ans. Sur la photo qui t\u00e9moigne de cette \u00e9poque (image 5 dans la gallerie), on la reconna\u00eet bien\u00a0!<\/h4>\n<h4>Milena s\u2019int\u00e9resse \u00e0 tous les styles de danse indienne\u00a0:<\/h4>\n<h4>Le BHARATA \u00a0NATYAM\u00a0: danse d\u00e9votionnelle du sud de l\u2019Inde dans\u00e9e par des solistes.<\/h4>\n<h4>Le KATHAK\u00a0: danse de cour du nord de l\u2019Inde qui amalgame\u00a0 les cultures de l\u2019Inde et du monde musulman.<\/h4>\n<h4>Le style ODISSI\u00a0: danse d\u00e9votionnelle de l\u2019est.<\/h4>\n<h4>Mais ce qu\u2019elle aime par-dessus tout est :<\/h4>\n<h4>le KATHAKALI\u00a0: danse \u2013 th\u00e9\u00e2tre qui met en sc\u00e8ne les grandes \u00e9pop\u00e9es. Contrairement aux styles pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents, le kathakali sous-entend une troupe d\u2019acteurs qui se met aux services d\u2019un grand texte fondateur.<\/h4>\n<h4>Il faut entendre\u00a0 Milena parler du ma\u00eetre indien qui parle et corrige peu, en respectant le temp\u00e9rament de chaque \u00e9l\u00e8ve, de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 ce que celui-ci interpr\u00e8te les gestes traditionnels\u00a0 avec sa nature propre qu\u2019il met au service de v\u00e9rit\u00e9s qui le d\u00e9passent\u00a0; la danse indienne traditionnelle n\u2019est pas un art de divertissement. Sa dimension m\u00e9taphysique est pleinement affirm\u00e9e et assum\u00e9e.<\/h4>\n<h4>De retour en France, Milena\u00a0 contacte Jean-Louis Barrault pour organiser une tourn\u00e9e avec une troupe de Kathakali. Elle est missionn\u00e9e par l\u2019Unesco pour choisir les artistes et le r\u00e9pertoire. Elle y reste six mois. C\u2019est le d\u00e9but d\u2019une collaboration fructueuse avec cet organisme qui a cru en son talent et soutenu son travail d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but.<\/h4>\n<h4>Sa vie prend un nouveau virage quand elle rencontre Roger Filipuzzi. Roger construit des maisons, mais il s\u2019int\u00e9resse surtout au yoga et \u00e0 la philosophie indienne. Ils se marient en 1974 et cr\u00e9ent le th\u00e9\u00e2tre Mandapa l\u2019ann\u00e9e suivante alors que Milena est enceinte d\u2019Isabelle Anna.<\/h4>\n<h4>Pendant que Milena danse au festival off d\u2019Avignon, invit\u00e9e par Fran\u00e7oise et Dominique Dupuy, Roger part \u00e0 la recherche d\u2019un lieu dans Paris qui permettrait \u00e0 Milena de donner des cours de Bharata Natyam et de Kathakali comme elle le fait depuis 1973.<\/h4>\n<h4>Roger trouve, au c\u0153ur de la Butte aux Cailles dans le 13\u00e8me arrondissement de Paris, un ancien laboratoire compos\u00e9 de deux b\u00e2timents s\u00e9par\u00e9s par une petite cour dont il d\u00e9tecte imm\u00e9diatement le potentiel. Ainsi na\u00eet le centre Mandapa (*). Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son \u00e9nergie, la salle de cours du projet initial, se transforme en th\u00e9\u00e2tre et en centre de cr\u00e9ation pour les arts reli\u00e9s \u00e0 une tradition. Milena reconna\u00eet volontiers combien ce lieu est redevable \u00e0 la vision de Roger.<\/h4>\n<h4>Pendant plus de 20 ans, Mandapa a programm\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0solo sans fronti\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb,\u00a0 des cycles consacr\u00e9s \u00e0 la danse contemporaine.<\/h4>\n<h4>C\u2019est aussi un lieu r\u00e9put\u00e9 pour sa programmation pointue en direction du conte. \u00ab\u00a0 Contes d\u2019hiver\u00a0\u00bb en est \u00e0 sa 25\u00e8me \u00e9dition.<\/h4>\n<h4>Milena et Roger ont \u00e9t\u00e9 des acteurs d\u00e9terminants et d\u00e9termin\u00e9s dans le sauvetage du KUTIYATTAM\u00a0: plus vieux th\u00e9\u00e2tre dans\u00e9 du monde. Pr\u00e9serv\u00e9 par quelques familles d\u2019artistes et repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re confidentielle, cette forme d\u2019expression \u00e9tait en voie de disparition. Milena et Roger leur consacrent un film qui obtiendra le prix CID-UNESCO du concours international vid\u00e9o-danse de 1994.<\/h4>\n<h4>Le KUTIYATTAM est inscrit au patrimoine immat\u00e9riel de l\u2019humanit\u00e9 depuis 2001 et Milena est fi\u00e8re d\u2019avoir contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la pr\u00e9servation de ce savoir ancestral.<\/h4>\n<h4>Aujourd\u2019hui Roger nous a quitt\u00e9s. Le lieu est impr\u00e9gn\u00e9 de son inventivit\u00e9. Milena \u0153uvre toujours pour que Mandapa demeure un lieu vivant et non pas un mus\u00e9e\u00a0; un lieu o\u00f9 l\u2019on puisse se ressourcer en pratiquant des activit\u00e9s traditionnelles\u00a0; un lieu ouvert sur la cr\u00e9ation.<\/h4>\n<h4>En 1985, Milena et Roger adoptent une petite fille chez M\u00e8re Teresa : Maria Kiran (rayon de lumi\u00e8re). Comme sa maman d\u2019adoption avant elle, elle arrive en France \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 4 ans.<\/h4>\n<h4>Isabelle Anna et Maria Kiran ont grandi, elles poursuivent toutes deux des carri\u00e8res internationales, la premi\u00e8re dans le style Kathak et la deuxi\u00e8me en Bharata Natyam.<\/h4>\n<h4>Le th\u00e9\u00e2tre Mandapa a 35 ann\u00e9es d\u2019existence. La Mairie de Paris et le Minist\u00e8re des affaires culturelles soutiennent ses projets. Le nom complet pour celui d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 la musique et au culte est natya mandapa.<\/h4>\n<p><!--:--><!--:en--><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4>A \u00a04-year old girl from Milan (Italy) comes to Paris. Her father has just died, her French-born mother leaves Italy, \u00a0working as a pianist in piano-bars and\u00a0 as an accompanist to singers \u00a0at dances.<\/h4>\n<h4>In such musical surroundings, Milena starts playing the piano and takes up ballet dancing.<\/h4>\n<h4>Following in her mother\u2019s steps, her first choice is music: she starts at the national music school as a 15-year-old, studies harmony, counterpoint and fugue up to 1955 when she finishes with two first prizes in counterpoint and harmony. On picture 4, she is the lovely young woman on the right, leaning at the end of the piano.<\/h4>\n<h4>However it all changes when she sees a Kathakali dance and is struck with a lifelong passion for all things Indian: Indian devotional dances, theatre dances and music. She takes up dancing again, with a will, in particular modern dancing (she will be a member of Sara Pardo\u2019s ballet team), and spends 4 years studying mime techniques with Decroux.<\/h4>\n<h4>In 1962 she is granted a scholarship to study Kathakali in India, where she spends 2 years. She is easy to recognize on the picture taken at that time (n\u00b05).<\/h4>\n<h4>Milena is interested in all styles of Indian dance:<\/h4>\n<h4>BHARATA NATYAM: solo devotional dances of the South of India.<\/h4>\n<h4>KATHAK: a North of India court dance style mixing Indian and Moslem cultures.<\/h4>\n<h4>ODISSI style: devotional dances from the East of India.<\/h4>\n<h4>However her main interest is in:<\/h4>\n<h4>KATHAKALI : a traditional dance drama staging Indian epics. Unlike the above, Kathakali implies a troupe acting out a text.<\/h4>\n<h4>Milena talks about the Indian dance master who speaks little, seldom corrects his pupils, respects each one\u2019s personality so that he or she may interpret the traditional gestures in his or her own way, serving a higher truth; Indian traditional dancing is not for entertainment. It has a fully asserted metaphysical dimension.<\/h4>\n<h4>Back in France, Milena got in touch with Jean-Louis Barrault to set up a tour with a Kathakali troupe. Unesco commissioned her to choose dancers, musicians and repertory, which she did for six months, starting a fruitful collaboration with an organisation who believed in her talent and supported her work from the start.<\/h4>\n<h4>Her life takes a new bend when she meets Roger Filipuzzi, who builds houses but whose main interest is yoga and Indian philosophy. They get married in 1974 and create the Mandapa Theatre the next year, shortly before the birth of their daughter Isabelle Anna.<\/h4>\n<h4>While Milena dances at the off part of the Avignon festival, invited by Fran\u00e7oise and Dominique Dupuy, Roger hunts for premises in Paris where Milena could teach Bharata Natyam and Kathakali\u2013 she started teaching both in 1973.<\/h4>\n<h4>In the old Butte aux Cailles neighbourhood, Paris 13, Roger finds a former laboratory made up of two buildings and a small middle yard and sees the potential of the place. The Mandapa Centre (*) is thus started. He pours his energy into the project and the initial teaching room eventually becomes a theatre and a creation centre for traditional arts. Milena fully recognizes how much the place owes to Roger\u2019s vision.<\/h4>\n<h4>In that place, under the name \u00ab solo sans fronti\u00e8re \u00bb, Mandapa was to program cycles devoted to modern dancing over a period of 20 years and more.<\/h4>\n<h4>It is also well known for staging tales \u2013 they have just had the 25<sup>th<\/sup> edition of \u00abContes d\u2019hiver \u00bb (winter tales)<\/h4>\n<h4>Milena and Roger played a decisive part in saving KUTIYATTAM, the oldest danced theatre form in the world; it was on the brink of disappearing, only kept alive by a handful of families of dancers and artists and performed to dwindling audiences, when Milena and Roger shot a film about it that won the CID-UNESCO prize at the 1994 international competition of video-dance.<\/h4>\n<h4>KUTIYATTAM got on the Unesco list of intangible cultural heritage in 2001. Milena is proud of having played a part in saving it.<\/h4>\n<h4>Roger is no longer with us but Mandapa is steeped in his inventivity. Milena takes care that Mandapa does not become a museum but remains a live place, open to people needing to renew themselves through traditional activities, a creative place.<\/h4>\n<h4>In 1985 Milena and Roger adopted a girl from Mother Teresa\u2019s orphanage: Maria Kiran (meaning \u201cray of light\u201d). Same as her adoptive mother, she arrived in France at the age of four.<\/h4>\n<h4>Isabelle Anna and Maria Kiran are now on international careers, the elder in the Kathak style, the younger in Bharata Natyam.<\/h4>\n<h4>The Mandapa theatre has been in existence for 35 years. The City of Paris and the Minister for Culture both back up its projects.
